University Courses???

Well, university begins in about two weeks for me and I thought it would be a good idea to get the yearbook (with all the programmes and subjects) and the calender (the timetable) so that I could sort out my subjects and timetable. Last year everybody was confused as to what was going to happpen in our final year. We heard that things were going to change regarding subject choices and that metasciences (a third year compulsory module) were going to be phased out. Then there were rumours going around about what was going to happen. But; all this is explained in the new yearbook.

These are my requirements for 3rd year: Continuation of two subjects (48 credits each), plus (i) a 24-credit module, or two 12-credit modules of a subject at third-year level or (ii) two metadisciplines (12 credits each). This for a total of 120 credits.

I will continue with General Linguistics and Applied English Language Studies (my majors), that will satisfy the first requirement of 48 credits. For the 24-credit module at third-year level, I could take French 3 (one module). The only thing is that I don't know if they will allow me to do one module as you need to complete both modules to succesfully complete the course (this is how it usually works). The other option, the two 12-credit modules, I could take two Ancient Cultures modules and I wouldn't have to take all four modules to complete the course; however, Ancient Cultures 3 clashes with General Linguistics 3 (one of my majors), so that's out too. The only other option is the two Metadisciplines. I planned on taking the one module, Meta Science 314 Scientific Language Investigation as Detective Work, mainly because this is part of the Linguistics department. But now that I have to take another Meta Science, I thought of doing 354 Philosophy of the Human Sciences. I'll have to check that this is not part of the philosophy department - there's no way I'm doing philosophy again.

So my options: Applied English Language Studies; General Linguistics; French; Ancient Cultures and Metadisciplines. I am definitely continuing with General Linguistics and Applied English Language Studies, they are my majors.

I have enough marks to carry on with French, but I don't know if you can only take the one module to complete the course, and I'm not taking two modules of French - it will be Literature, and I'm bad at French literature (my marks would have been much higher if it weren't for literature). Ancient Cultures will clash with my Applied English classes so there's no way I can take that course. So what I'm left with is the two Metadisciplines. Which I gathered, are useless courses. Anyway.

I also want to continue with my Chinese studies, but those classes clash with Applied English. However, Chinese will be an extra course that counts for no credits. This means that I don't have to worry about marks - although I will work hard - and attending classes. Hopefully, the practicals and tutorials will be in class times I can attend, then that will be enough. My friend will also be taking it, so she can help me. I mean, we covered the basics regarding phonetics (pronounciation and accents) and basic strokes of the Chinese characters. The Chinese department is great (I even befriended one of the lecturers), and they know that I want to continue and that I am a dedicated worker (I am the 2nd top student in my class) so I hope they will allow me to continue.

I register for my third year on the 2nd of February. It's soon.
